50 Short Bible Verses About Love: Scripture That Shows God's Heart
Love is the most talked-about topic in both Scripture and human experience. And yet, the Bible's view of love is radically different from almost every other version of it we encounter. It isn't primarily a feeling. It isn't conditional. It doesn't come and go with mood or circumstance. The love the Bible describes is a settled choice, a character trait, and ultimately — a Person.
These 50 short Bible verses about love are easy to memorize, easy to share, and deep enough to last a lifetime. Each one is followed by a single sentence of context. Work through them slowly. Let the ones that surprise you do their work.
God's Love for You
1. John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." The most famous verse in the Bible — and still the best place to start understanding love.
2. Romans 8:39 "Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Nothing you do, and nothing that happens to you, can cut you off from this love.
3. 1 John 4:8 "He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love." God doesn't just express love — He is its very definition.
4. 1 John 4:10 "Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins." Love started with God, not us — He moved first.
5. Jeremiah 31:3 "The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee." God's love doesn't have a beginning you can remember or an end you need to fear.
6. Zephaniah 3:17 "The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing." God sings over you. He doesn't just tolerate you — He delights in you.
7. Isaiah 49:16 "Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands." Your name is written on God's hands. You are not forgotten.
8. Romans 5:8 "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." God's love didn't wait until you were better. It arrived while you were at your worst.
9. Psalm 86:15 "But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth." These are the adjectives the Psalmist uses for God. Worth sitting with.
10. 1 John 3:1 "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God." The love of God is so extraordinary that it makes us His children.
What Love Looks Like
11. 1 Corinthians 13:4 "Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up." The famous "love chapter" begins not with feelings but with behavior.
12. 1 Corinthians 13:5 "Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil." Love doesn't keep score. It isn't easily offended. It doesn't nurse resentment.
13. 1 Corinthians 13:7 "Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things." Love bears, believes, hopes, and endures — even when feeling it is hard.
14. 1 Corinthians 13:8 "Charity never faileth." Three words. Love outlasts everything else.
15. 1 Corinthians 13:13 "And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity." Of all the great Christian virtues, love is the greatest.
16. John 13:35 "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another." Love is the identifier of the Christian. Not doctrine alone — love.
17. Ephesians 4:2 "With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love." Bearing with each other's weaknesses is an act of love, not just tolerance.
18. Colossians 3:14 "And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness." Love is what holds all the other virtues together.
19. 1 Peter 4:8 "And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins." Fervent love — the kind that covers and forgives — is above all things.
20. Romans 13:10 "Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law." All the commands of the law are summed up in love that does no harm.
Loving God
21. Matthew 22:37 "Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind." The first and greatest commandment — total love, not partial.
22. Mark 12:30 "And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength." Mark adds "strength" — love expressed through action, not just emotion.
23. Deuteronomy 6:5 "And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might." The original source — Moses teaching Israel the shape of devotion.
24. John 14:15 "If ye love me, keep my commandments." Love for God is shown in obedience — not as a burden, but as a response.
25. 1 John 5:3 "For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous." Obedience is the natural expression of love — and it isn't as heavy as it sounds.
Loving Others
26. Mark 12:31 "And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself." The second greatest commandment. Self-love is assumed; neighbor-love is commanded.
27. John 13:34 "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another." The standard is Jesus's love — not just pleasant feelings but sacrificial action.
28. John 15:13 "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." The highest expression of love is self-sacrifice.
29. Romans 12:10 "Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another." Put others first. Not as a rule to follow, but as a love to express.
30. Galatians 5:13 "By love serve one another." Freedom in Christ is not freedom from responsibility — it's freedom to serve.
31. Ephesians 5:2 "And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us." Love isn't a destination — it's a way of walking through every day.
32. 1 Thessalonians 3:12 "And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men." Love isn't static. It grows. Paul prays for its increase.
33. Hebrews 13:1 "Let brotherly love continue." Simple, direct, urgent. Keep loving each other.
34. 1 John 4:7 "Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God." The ability to truly love comes from God — it's a sign of His life in us.
35. 1 John 4:11 "Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another." Because we have been loved, we love. The logic flows in only one direction.
Love in Hard Moments
36. Luke 6:27 "But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you." The most challenging love command Jesus gave — and possibly the most transforming.
37. Matthew 5:44 "But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you." Not passive tolerance but active goodness toward those who oppose you.
38. Romans 12:9 "Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good." Real love isn't naive — it hates evil while holding fast to what is good.
39. Proverbs 10:12 "Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins." Love is a peacemaker. It chooses to cover rather than expose.
40. Proverbs 17:17 "A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity." Real love shows up especially when it costs something.
Love and Forgiveness
41. Ephesians 4:32 "And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you." The reason to forgive is always God's forgiveness of us — not the other person's worthiness.
42. Colossians 3:13 "Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye." Forgiveness is the love response to being wronged.
43. Matthew 18:22 "Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven." There is no limit on Christian forgiveness — because there is no limit on God's.
44. Luke 17:4 "And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him." Forgiveness is not about counting — it's about releasing.
Love That Lasts
45. Song of Solomon 8:7 "Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it." Love, properly rooted, survives everything the world throws at it.
46. Psalm 136:26 "O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endureth for ever." "Mercy" here is hesed — covenant love that never gives up.
47. Lamentations 3:22 "It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not." God's love is the reason we're still here.
48. Psalm 63:3 "Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee." If you had to choose between God's love and your own life — the Psalmist says the love wins.
49. Isaiah 54:10 "For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee." When everything else moves, God's love stays.
50. Romans 8:38 "For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." The love that cannot be taken from you. The verse every Christian should know by heart.
