Prayer Journal Guide: How to Start, What to Write, and How to Review

A practical guide to keeping a prayer journal — different formats that work, what to write, how to review old entries, and why journaling transforms your prayer life.

A prayer journal is one of the most transformative spiritual tools available — and one of the most abandoned. People start with enthusiasm and quit within weeks, either because they don't know what to write, they feel like they're not doing it right, or they run out of things to say.

This guide is practical. What to write, how to structure it, how to maintain it, and what to do with it over time.

What a Prayer Journal Is

A prayer journal is a written record of your conversations with God — your prayers, your Scripture reflections, what you sense God saying, your struggles, your gratitude, your questions, your longings.

It's different from a regular journal in that its primary orientation is toward God, not primarily for personal processing. It's a record of a relationship, not just an emotional outlet.

It's also different from a "quiet time checklist" — it's not a record of your spiritual performance but a documentation of your actual inner life before God.

Why It Matters

Memory. Prayer is conversation, and conversations are easily forgotten. Writing creates a record you can return to. When you look back at entries from six months ago and see how God answered a prayer you'd forgotten praying, it builds faith for current uncertainty.

Honesty. Writing slows you down and forces specificity. It's harder to pray vaguely on paper. "God, I'm stressed" becomes "God, I'm afraid that the financial situation will require me to tell my family that we can't do the vacation we've been planning, and I'm embarrassed about it." The specificity is the point.

Consistency. Journaling creates a ritual that makes prayer habitual. The blank page invites you to show up. Many people find it easier to pray when they write.

Pattern recognition. Over months, your journal reveals patterns in your inner life that aren't visible day to day: recurring anxieties, areas of persistent growth, prayers that drift over time, seasons of closeness to God and distance.

Format 1: Free Write

The simplest approach: open the journal and write to God. Address him directly. Say what's on your mind, what you're grateful for, what you're asking for, what you're confused about.

No structure. No template. Just honest conversation, written out.

This is the most natural form and works well once you've established a practice. It can feel overwhelming for beginners because of the blank page problem.

Tip: Start with "God, today I'm..." and let that carry you forward.

Format 2: ACTS (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication)

A classic structured approach:

A — Adoration: Who is God? Write what you know and love about his character. Not what you're grateful for — just who he is. "You are patient. You are faithful. You have never left me though I've walked away repeatedly."

C — Confession: What needs to be named? Be specific. Not "forgive me for my sins in general" but "I was dismissive of my spouse this morning. I indulged resentment toward my coworker. I've been avoiding prayer this week."

T — Thanksgiving: What specific gifts from the last 24 hours? Name them concretely. One or two carefully observed things are worth more than a generic list.

S — Supplication: Bring your requests. Specifically. For yourself and for others. Write names, situations, specific needs.

This format ensures you don't skip essential movements of prayer — people who skip confession tend toward entitlement; people who skip adoration tend toward anxiety; people who skip thanksgiving tend toward ingratitude.

Format 3: The Daily Examen in Writing

Based on Ignatius's examen (see the evening prayer article), this format reviews the day:

  1. What am I grateful for from today?
  2. Where did I feel most alive / closest to God?
  3. Where did I feel most drained / most distant?
  4. What needs to be confessed?
  5. What do I want to ask God for tomorrow?

This format works best in the evening. It's reflective rather than anticipatory.

Format 4: Scripture + Response

Read a passage of Scripture, then write your response to it:

  • What did you observe?
  • What word or phrase stood out?
  • What is God saying to you through this text?
  • What is your response — prayer, commitment, question?

This is essentially the SOAP method adapted into journaling. It keeps Scripture central to your prayer and prevents the journal from becoming primarily a processing of your inner life without God's word shaping it.

What to Include

Prayers for others. Keep a list of names — family, friends, colleagues, situations — and pray specifically for each. Return to them. Note what changes.

Scripture that strikes you. When a verse lands with unusual weight, write it out and pray it back.

What you sense God saying. This requires discernment and humility — you're not writing down divine revelation. But when you sense something in prayer — an impression, a conviction, a comfort — write it. Date it. Test it over time.

Questions. "I don't understand why..." "I'm struggling to believe..." The journal is a safe place for your theological and personal questions. They don't have to be resolved to be written.

Answered prayers. This is the most overlooked part of prayer journaling. When you see an answer — write it down, dated. These entries become some of the most valuable: the record of God's faithfulness that you can return to in seasons of doubt.

How to Review Old Entries

Monthly: Glance back at the previous month. What were you praying about? Has anything changed? What has God answered?

Quarterly: A more deliberate review. Note patterns. Where has your trust grown? Where are you still stuck in the same fears? What prayers have been answered in unexpected ways?

Annually: Read through the year's journal. This is often a deeply moving practice — seeing the arc of a year of conversations with God. Note growth. Celebrate answered prayer. Name the losses and how God met you in them.

Practical Setup

Choose the right medium. Some people thrive with a beautiful hardcover journal. Others do better digitally (Day One, Notion, or even a Google Doc). The best medium is the one you'll actually use.

Write for an audience of one. Your journal is for God, not for readers. Write freely without editing for how it sounds. The honesty is the point.

Keep it accessible. Your journal should be with your Bible, in the place where you pray. Friction kills habits.

Start small. Five minutes of journaled prayer every day beats sporadic one-hour sessions. Consistency over intensity.

Don't quit after missing days. Missing a day (or a week, or a month) is not failure. Simply begin again. The journal doesn't care about the gap.

A Sample Entry

"God, I woke up already anxious — thinking about the conversation I need to have with my boss this week. You know how much I hate conflict. I'm scared of his reaction and I'm not confident I'm right even though I think I am. Help me approach it with honesty and humility instead of self-protection.

Thank you for the long walk yesterday — I didn't expect to feel so much better after it. Thank you that the kids were happy this morning. Thank you for [spouse's name] who is patient with me when I'm irritable.

I'm still struggling with feeling distant from you. The morning prayer feels mechanical. I don't know what to do with that. I'm showing up anyway.

You are faithful. You have never actually left. Even now. Amen."

That's a prayer journal entry. Imperfect, honest, conversational, specific. That's what God is after.
