Change your heart radically through the love of Jesus Christ.

Recovery is lived in days. Sometimes in hours. Sometimes in the sixty seconds between wanting and choosing. The person in recovery who has twenty years sober has lived it exactly the same way the person in early recovery lives it: one day, one hour, one moment at a time.

"Give us this day our daily bread" (Matthew 6:11) — the Lord's Prayer teaches us to ask for today's portion, not all of life's provision at once. This is the spiritual wisdom of recovery: you don't have to stay sober for the rest of your life. You have to stay sober today. And today's grace is always available.

The Serenity Prayer — beloved in twelve-step communities — is a theological gem: "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference." This is essentially a prayer for surrender, discernment, and empowerment — all in three lines.

Daily Prayers for Sobriety

A Morning Sobriety Prayer

Lord, I begin today choosing sobriety. Not tomorrow, not the rest of my life — today.

I acknowledge that I cannot do this on my own. I have tried on my own, and the evidence is clear. I need your Spirit, I need my community, I need the honesty of accountability.

Give me what I need for today: the clarity of mind to recognize when the pull is coming before it's a crisis, people to reach out to rather than isolate, meaningful activity that fills the space, and the deep sense of your presence rather than the numbness I used to seek.

I receive today's grace — it's enough for today. I trust you for tomorrow's grace tomorrow. Amen.

A Prayer When Cravings Are Strong

Lord, the craving is strong right now. My body wants what it used to have and the pull is real.

I don't have to give in. Between the craving and the choice is a moment — give me that moment. Give me the pause. Fill it with your Spirit.

I'm going to [call my sponsor / go to a meeting / tell someone what's happening] right now. That's the next right thing. Help me do it. Amen.

A Prayer After a Difficult Day

Father, today was hard. The triggers were present, the stress was real, and staying sober took real effort.

But I made it. Today, I chose differently. Give me gratitude for that — not pride, which is dangerous, but genuine thankfulness that your grace was sufficient for today.

Give me rest tonight. Let me sleep without needing to manage my nervous system with substance. And be with me when I wake up, ready for whatever tomorrow brings. Amen.

A Prayer After a Meeting

Lord, I just came from a meeting. I heard things that helped and saw people fighting the same battle I fight. Thank you for this community — for the honesty, the accountability, the reminder that I'm not alone in this.

Let what I heard tonight stay with me. Let the connections I made continue. And let me be for others in recovery what others have been for me — a witness that sobriety is possible, one day at a time.

Amen.

A Gratitude Prayer for Long-Term Sobriety

God, [number] days/months/years. This is a miracle.

I remember where I was. I remember the bottom. I remember what I told myself I would never let happen, and then what happened anyway. And I remember the moment I asked for help.

Thank you. Thank you for the people you sent. For the program. For the sponsor who picked up at 2 AM. For the days I white-knuckled it and for the days it was almost easy. Thank you for my life.

Keep me humble. Sobriety is not something I achieved — it's something I receive, day by day. I'll keep coming back. Amen.

The Serenity Prayer in Full

The short form is the most quoted, but the full Serenity Prayer (attributed to Reinhold Niebuhr) is worth knowing:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardship as a pathway to peace; taking, as Jesus did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; trusting that You will make all things right if I surrender to Your will; so that I may be reasonably happy in this life, and supremely happy with You forever in the next. Amen.

What Scripture Says About the Sober Mind

1 Peter 5:8: "Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour."

1 Thessalonians 5:6-8: "So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober."

Titus 2:12: "Training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age."

Sobriety in Scripture is not primarily about avoiding substances — it's about the clear-minded, spiritually alert life that is available to those who are not numbed by compulsive behavior of any kind. It's the life of a person who can see clearly, choose freely, and engage fully with God and others.

A Full Daily Prayer for Sobriety

Lord, today I choose sobriety. With your help — which I desperately need.

I acknowledge the specific challenges today holds: [name them]. I acknowledge the specific supports I will use: [my sponsor, my meeting, my accountability partner].

Give me your Spirit for today. The craving will come — I know this. When it does, give me the pause, the clarity, the courage to choose differently. Remind me in that moment of what I've built, what I've recovered, what I stand to lose.

I am not doing this alone. You are with me. My community is with me. Your grace is sufficient for today.

Thank you for yesterday's sobriety. I receive today's grace. I trust you for tomorrow. One day at a time. Amen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good daily sobriety prayer? A morning prayer that acknowledges dependence on God, asks for the day's grace, and names specific supports is ideal. The Serenity Prayer is also powerful, especially when prayed with full attention to its meaning.

How does prayer help with sobriety? Prayer connects the person in recovery to a source of strength beyond their own willpower. It also builds the habit of turning toward God (rather than toward the substance) when stress, craving, or difficulty arrives. Many people in long-term recovery describe prayer as the most important daily practice in their sobriety.

What does the Bible say about sobriety? 1 Peter 5:8, 1 Thessalonians 5:6-8, and Titus 2:12 all affirm the value of sober-mindedness. The theological vision is not primarily about avoiding harm but about the clear-minded, fully present, spiritually alert life that is available to those not in the grip of compulsion.

Should I pray alone or with community? Both. Daily personal prayer is essential. Corporate prayer — at meetings, with a sponsor, with a faith community — is also powerful. The twelve-step tradition's emphasis on community reflects the biblical truth that recovery is not a solo project.
